About 5 years ago, while looking for a new pair of soccer cleats to replace my old ones (Which had played in at least two dozen games and a couple hundred practices, and countless chewings from my Lab) I remembered a friend mentioning that most of the big stores now had websites where you could view pictures of the shoes and read product information on them. So naturally, I called my brother the computer geek. I was surprised at what he told me about online shopping. It seems that not only could you view the shoes and read about them, but you could buy them directly from the site as well. They would ship from the site and arrive directly at your home in a matter of just a few days. The world wide web would never be the same. Today, there are literally thousands of online retailers. And with the obvious draw of reaching millions of customers with a lower overhead than a traditional brick and mortar store, all of the big retailers have jumped on board. Retailers like Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, TJ Maxx, Fashion Bug and hundreds of others have created impressive websites which together draw millions of customers daily. This has also spawned businesses which operate only online, like Amazon, Buy.com, Overstock and many more. What are the advantages of shopping online? Well, first and foremost of course is convenience. The need to fill up the car with gas and head to the mall is gone, let alone the problem of the drive there, and the fighting of crowds at a retail store simply does not exist on the web. You can also shop from your laptop or desktop 24 hours a day. Websites rarely close. But the biggest advantage I have found is that shopping online is cheaper. That's right cheaper. I've now become a dedicated online shopper, having made about 50% of purchases in the last 2 years online. And I would bet that I have saved perhaps 25% - 30% over what I would have spent by shopping the traditional way. How? Well, websites cost less to run. It costs a business a lot less to do everything by computer, so prices are lower. Many sites are set up so that you deal with the site electronically. Typically, someone checks your order and forwards it (electronically of course) to a warehouse, where your order is fulfilled and shipped. No sales clerks to pay, no stores to maintain, no rent to pay the shopping center. Those savings, however are only part of the story. Competition for shopping dollars has quickly become fierce. And retailers are fighting one another to get you to shop at their websites. They offer sales more often than their B&M counterparts. Free shipping is fairly common. And coupon codes are often available to save you even more. These are usually combinations of numbers and letters which can save you even more than the advertised sale price on an item. So how do I learn to shop online? 1. Visit a site like www.crazytowndeals.com. They'll list lots of the best deals on the web featuring items from electronics to shoes to help save you money. You can even e-mail the moderators at the site if you have a question or need help. 2. If you see an item you like, buy it. Many hot deals on the web disappear quickly. So don't expect to buy it 3 days from now 3. Be prepared to save money. I was very surprised at how much I've saved on everything from a new stereo to groceries (Yes, groceries!)
